Is a 99' 2.0L from a jetta a bad swap?
Im looking to get my engine swapped out cause im not a big fan of our little 8v that are in there and i came across a good deal on an engine from a 99 jetta 2.0L along with the manual tranny, it mite be a 6 speed ( my car is automatic right now, hate it!) but idk if anyone has done the swap or if anyone thinks its a good or a bad idea, just let me know. thank you

That is the beauty about a cabby, the 16v is a more common one but the 2.0 is doable.... but there is a ton o'stuff that you hav eto change over too.
I have seen a Northstar v8 shoehorned in to the cabby......

2L cross flow is doable for sure. You should even be able to run it on the digi2 FI system in the car. However, the tranny should be a 5 speed. No 6 spd jettas in 99 that I know of. Incidently, that motor could even work with your current autotragik tranny if you really wanted it to. However, 5spd is the place to be (sorry Brian)

with all the engine swaps out there, it could be a 16v 2L, however, Jetta's came with the 2L 8v. 2l 16v's generally came in the 90-93 Passats & GTi's. In 99, I think the 2L 8v and maybe the 1.8t came in the Jetta. I could be wrong though.
If you can get a pic of the engine, I'll be happy to identify it.

Re: Is a 99' 2.0L from a jetta a bad swap?
As I recall 1999 was a "crossover" year: 1999 models are A3 chassis, 1999.5 models are A4 chassis (but they generally aren't called "1999.5", they're just called 1999). Either way, 16V engines weren't installed in Jettas, other than in the A2 chassis. Therefore, the 2.0L engine you have (or are getting) is a 2.0L 8V with Motronic.
The 1999.5 and 2000 Jettas came with the following engines:
2.0L 8V
1.8L 8V turbo
2.8L 12V (VR6)
1.9L turbo diesel (TDI)
2.0L 8V swaps aren't very common, but it's do-able.
Edit: Was reminded of this Vortex thread in searching for swap info for an idiot over there: http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=3076623 . It's basically a how-to for swapping in a Motronic ABA 2.0 (don't if it's an 8V or a 16V - didn't wait for the whole thing to load).

It's most likely an 8V as has been posted.
The transmission is weaker in the A3 chassis so leave it and find an A1 close ratio 5 speed.
The head and intake manifold can be used but it is a far easier conversion to use the 1.8 head from your old engine installed on the 2.0L.
You will either need to buy a modified downpipe or lengthen the existing front pipe by about an inch because the 2.0L block is higher.
Everything else is pretty much plug and play after that.
