Help! Ashtray assembly

Post by ibennett »

Many moon's ago I took the ashtray out of my cabby and along with it the metal bracket that fits behind the dash that holds it in place, now I don't remember how to put it back in. For some ungodly reason it wasn't one of the things that was covered in my restore.

I would greatly appreciate anyone's input on this. Thanks, Ilene

Dumb question first.

Are you talking just the ash tray, or the whole assembly including the cigarette lighter?

Here is the whole assembly.

If it is just the tray,

All you have to do is close the lid of the tray and insert it into the housing. Be careful that you align the guides on the side of the tray with those in the housing.

If it is the whole unit, I have another stupid question.

Does your car have AC?

Sounds stupid, but cars with AC have the ash tray mounted in the knee bar, where non AC cars have it mounted in the dash below the heater controls.

The assembly I have shown is from a non AC car, and all you have to do is attach the electrical connector to the lighter and push it into place untill the two spring tabs on the top engage the dash. Note that the right hand tab in the picture is broken off and only in place to show it.

If it is an AC car, I unfortunatly can't help, there aren't too many of them around here, and I don't know if there are any differences.

Hope I was able to help.

None of the questions where dumb! I'm talking everything including the lighter and yes I do have A/C in mine. My ashtray setup looks different than what you have pictured.

I was hoping to avoid taking the lower dash/ knee bar out but it may come to that.

I apreciate the effort very much.

I have an A/C equipped car. I could take the ash tray out and take a photo of where it goes if that would help. I've removed the ash tray itself to clean it but I've never disassembled it any further.

Gull, I do appreciate the offer of you taking the entire thing out but please don't go that far on my account unless you have a need. I have a feeling that the knee bar/ lower dash is going to have to come out to do it and that I'll need help on my end. I think I'm also missing a few clips that held in the metal bracket in the back, they are long gone.

Didn't really plan on taking the whole thing out, but if a photo of the bracket would help I could do that.

I'll try to get one for you later today, assuming there's anything even visible with it in the dash. I've never really looked closely at that assembly. :)
