Need some thoughts for the crabby cabby

Post by Calimus »

Ok, so all this killing myself at work is paying off a bit and I'm getting a decent bonus. While I intend to use this for finishing up the rocco, I'd also like to do something for the crabby cabby. Cristine has been working similair hours to me, but she will see no bonus as right now her company isn't doing as well as mine.

That said, I'd like to do something for her. While my bonus is decent, it's not record setting so a new top isn't in the picture even though I'd like to do it. So, I'm looking for some ideas and I figured I'll ask some of the best people I know in this department.

While crabby does already have a nice assortment of goodies, it also doesn't mean that they can't be upgraded. So fire away, I'm open to just about anything.

Well I know of someone in the area that can install a top for a reasonable amount...Usually works for beer.
A nice set of seat covers
Ya already fixed the rocker dent.
Ya have the strut bar
So I suppose a 2.0 upgrade to the 1.8 is in the works?

Beer I can afford. Not sure about all the top materials. I haven't priced them in ages, so maybe I should do that before counting that out. An I certainly appreciate the offer Brian. I might just take you up on that.

As for the under-hood lump, no 2L's in the cabby's future. However, I will be rebuilding the 1.8 16v from my rocco and dropping that in the cabby. I think the 16v will be more then enough umph for crabby. Just haven't desided if I will go Digi 1 for that, or maybe megasquirt. I've just about had it with CIS in any form. It's not that it's dificult to set, just that for whatever reason, in my garage, it constantly takes a vacation and had to be beat back into submission

I think Crabby is just dandy the way she is! 8)

New tops run $150+... depends on the supplier, top type, etc.

I agree with Kammy, Crabby is one beautiful Cabby.

So instead of an upgrade, why not send it out for a nice detail job?

She would look like a brand new car!

I don't think it's possible for anyone to do a better detail job on crabby then Cristine. We have an entire shelf rack in the garage dedicated to the products and instuments of destruction that encompass the car detailing craft.

Pretty much before any show, Cristine will spend about 8 hours detailing the car and I have to admit, she's definitly got a knack for it. How you're idea wasn't a bad one, I just think I'd get in trouble for letting someone else touch crabby in that mannor

This is why it's so hard to find something to do to that car. I'm not saying it's perfect, but I'm trying hard not to cross that line of OEM+ untill Cristine wants to.

For now, it's looking like a new top. Have priced everything out, even the beer to fuel the top replacement machine that is Brian. I will also be doing some cleaning up the stock wiring thats been bugging me for a while as well.

Now with only 79 days to BAP.... I will need a little lead time to schedule it.... :) or you could drive it over leave it and pick it up..... I promise I won't ,,,,,, sabotage it.... :) and this week I am going to try to see in my "quick" method for doing the motor mounts is going to work.... as I have a spare tranny mount and a couple of brackets to play with. As that and the exhaust manifold is all that is left on the "Blue" one.

Brian, by no means would I put you under any kind of pressure like that. We have to get all the stuff ordered and such first. An if it's just too close to BAP, then Crabby with be shown with the top down and boot cover on as always. Might have to display this really cool boot cover bag we recently got through

I know you have penty of your own projects going on just as I do, so I wouldn't ask you to put a favor a head of your own stuff ever. But that reminds me that I need to do the tranny mount for the rocco still, damn I hate those things.

If this is a manual transmission car and you're still running the original shift linkage parts, I'd suggest popping in a MissingLinkZ shift linkage for a nice, relatively cheap upgrade. I particularly like the version with the weighted shift rod. It makes a huge difference in feel, and you can appreciate it every time you change gears. Plus it makes the shifter much easier to adjust. A sloppy, balky shifter is one of those things that makes an old car feel old.

While you're at it, change the clutch cable, too, and get your smooth clutch action back.

PSST he has had the weighted billet and short shifter kit for a couple of years... I should know I gave it to him gratis.

Yes it's true, I have that massive round paper weight that Brian gave me strapped to the linkage  Damn thing works too!

As far as a list of what the rides have, hrm, I smell a new section cooking.

So_Cal, a 16v conversion is in the post as you are 100% right, I do have one laying around. There is no rush on that however as I want her to get some use out of that purdy cam I shoved in the 8v last year. I think if the top gets replaced, and I get a small suspension issue resolved, she might go back to beati.....driving it daily  If not I'll force the issue by selling the beetle (which needs to be done anyway)

Hope to have new top parts on the way very soon.
