What would you do?

Hey gang, long time no post , sorry I haven't been around much lately, but the new job keeps me busy. Anyways, Taz is in hibernation for the winter, he's been laid up since September when I blew another head gasket. I have everything apart right now, but my dilemma is this. Do I spend $1500 and slap on a set of Weber DCOE 45's and a standalone ignition and timing computer OR do I save that cash and put it towards a full motor swap (which is definitely gonna cost a bit more in the long run). I don't know if I should dump any more cash into this 8V, even though it would sound and go completely badazz with the Webers. The other option of course is to just slap everything back together and sell it off in the spring..... .
I'm completely torn, the Webers would be pretty cool, but this 8V is pretty much maxed out as far as NA goes and going sidedraft carbs would negate doing a turbo. I've looked at megasquirt, but it just gets so damn complicated with all the sensors and crap you gotta deal with. Opinions, suggestions?

Jeff, Now that we know that you are alive and well (I had the whole northern Alberta VW community out looking for you), I think you do deserve a bit of a hard time for being so quiet.

As for your question. That is a tough one!

You have put so much of yourself in building Taz that I don't think you really want to sell it. so to me the question really is "to loose the 8V, and if so what to replace it with?"

I know you built the car to go fast that is fast enough to make the proverbial Porsche or Merceedes on the Autobahn look like it is standing still. (You know what I mean). Really what is the best way to achieve the Fast that you want (Who said a Fast is for a GTI only?).

I guess it comes down to where you can get more BANG for the buck.

Basically, if you are gonna keep blowing head gaskets, maybe it would be worth looking at a new engine

Although you seem happy with what the 8V can do, the Webber's would be cool.

Me, I'd probably do the Webbers.

Whatever you do, It would be great to see you and TAZ at Fahrfromhome (Last week end in May).

I've solved the head gasket issue once and for all (hopefully). Trouble was, I am running way too much CR and too much advance for the stock gasket to handle. (I also kind of accelerated the process this spring when I had the advance really cranked for a month ....long story, let's just say, don't rush when reassembling and always double check that everything is hooked up properly..LOL). I bought a 4 layer steel 2.0L gasket from England last month and that should hold pretty much anything I throw at it.

PS, sorry I missed everything this past season, but rest assured I will be back next year

You haven't seen my Cab recently, have you?

I have nothing against modding, including engine swaps. I'd do an engine swap on another Cab with a failing engine ... just wouldn't do it with my baby.

Lets re-cap, she lowered her car, and replace the factory bumpers.....so it is no longer stock....

Carbs on a crossflow head, Ooooooooo yeah.
You'll get to keep your tricked out bottom end, if your current head is hydraulic, you can use your current cam and gear.
Carbs on a crossflow look so right pointing front, wrong on a counterflow. Plus, no exhaust heat issues to the carbs themselves, nor on your fingers while you tune.
Can't do this sort of thing easily here in California due to smog rules, sure would like to though.

I might not have the stock grill on mine, but it is all OEM.

In the end, don't we all prepare the cars as we want them to be?
