My newly installed transmission is leaking oil from the driver's side drive shaft flange. So I bought a pair of oil seals to replace both sides.
I practised on my old transmission first, and wow is it difficult to even get the flange off, let alone back on. I'm not entirely sure how I'm going to be able to compress the spring on the flange and replace the c-clip whilst lying under my car. Surely there's a tool for this job?
Help... I wish I'd thought to do this before installing the tranny
None of those looke like they would be helpfull. When I changed the flanges on a 4k trannie that I bought, I just hot a friend come over. We used a metal coat hanger, wraped it around the trans and fixed it to the flang. Then I compressed the flange & springs as best I could with my bare hands and had my freind twist the coat hanger with pliers till it was tight enough and compressed enough to get the damn circle clip in place.
Who the hell needs proper tools when you have coat hangers
I've been brainstorming some sort of home made tool. I'll give something like this a go... Did you do it with the tranny in the car? from underneath? lying on your side?
No I had the advantage of having the tranny out of the car and on my bench. Not sure how well that would work with it in the car as it's very hard to get any leverage that way. It could possibly still work if you find a long enough coat hanger and took your time with it.
