Stereo went out tonight

Post by Aaron »

Ok, up visiting with Will and Christine tonight. On the way home i decided to play some tunes. I got nothing out of the speakers. Cd or tuner, nothing worked. The amp going to mids and highs isnt cutting on, nor the sub amp that I know of. By process of elimination, I figured it was the inline fuse (it was good), the Remote (hooked up and strapped down tight), or bad ground. The head unit cuts on, but no sound is coming out of the speakers. I dunno, I checked behind the deck tonight thinking that the remote may have come loose. It seems to be fine. I wiggled wires, made sure they were tight, checked the security of all points of contact. I have a 4 gauge with an inline fuse that runs back to a 4 to 1 distribution block in the trunk. So far this is where im at. The one tool that I need, I do not have. An ohm meter, or even a test light for that matter. Guess its just a game of checking how far up to the amp in which I am getting power. Thats my guess as of now.

On a side note, had the computer re flashed for the recall on the Cat converter today . Oh yeah (MK4), sorry guys. Dont know if this would affect it. But, it worked all day after the flash. Even on the way home from dinner . Got back in , and no sounds........ Hmmmmmmm

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys

Cat flash won't effect the sound system.

You have several components that could be causing the issue, though it could be the head unit itself. If you don't manage to figure it out before you get another chance to make it up, we can spend some time tracking it down.

Im a bit stumped William. It went out after I left your house. I remember them working in the Ingles p-lot. I was on the phone right after I left your house, I got on 75 and went to play it. Got nothing. pulled over, cut the car off. went through the hoops. Got home, pulled the deck out, wiggled wires, found out no lights were on on either of the amps. My guess is its a bad remote from the CD player. I am picking up a test light tomorrow to try and narrow the odds. No way im believing that both amps went out at the same time. As well as them being JL amps, they have no fuses on either of them. and the inline fuse is fine. ground is great. hmmmmmm..........

The Test Light tells all!

No power to the distribution block, no power beyond the inline fuse. Fuse looks great,,,,,,,,, But, popped a buddy's 60a fuse in and got sounds. It sure sucked when I had to give it back. Tomorrow, im on the hunt for a 60a fuse for sounds!

Leave it to me to ass-u-me things all the time. Thanks for the offering of help Will. Take care

What rating was the fuse that was in there? Don't add a bigger fuse to solve the issue. It blew for a reason and things need to be checked out. Using a larger fuse can cause an electrical fire and no one wants that.

Even a little section of small gauge wire going up in smoke can be big trouble. I had a 10 inch section of wire go that filled up the passenger compartment with smoke in my beetle. It happened while I was out driving, so my car looked like that van in Cheech&Chong Up in Smoke.

Plus, fried insulation smells bad :) .

No not at all Will. Thats a #1 no no in the stereo installation guide of my teenage years. Never did it with mine. Saw friends do it at their expense. Even after my warnings. The fuse was a 60a, I picked up a 60 today, Ive been on that fuse since the stereo was put in. It wasnt burned out. I pulled it out today and will examine it tomorrow. I think it may have dislodged itself at one of the ends on the inside of the glass, Ill inspect it and definately give a followup

Thanks bro

Haha, I used to work at a VW shop when i was 13, I saw one of the locals out rewiring his Oval (stereo). I walked inside to get the pushbroom. Came out and the whole car was FILLED with smoke as well as the parking lot. He fried a 4 gauge, from the battery to the dash. And you all know, all the way from the back seat!
