Changing transmission finally... what else?

Post by triplewhite »

I finally got my hands on a replacement 9A and I'm going to attempt the switch sometime over the next couple of weeks. I've been researching it a little online, and I have quite a lot of mechanical experience so I'm not concerned about being capable, but more about the other routine things I should check and change during the switch. I just had a new clutch a couple of months back so that should be ok.

Anyone have a handy list of tools that will be needed?

Thanks!

Ok cool thanks, I can do that... so no gaskets or oil seals or fiddly things like that... Do I need a clutch locating tool or not because I am completely removing the tranny?

since your that far apart i would change ALL the shift linkage bushings, it's cheap, and maybe the three motor mounts too. check your CV's since they will be disconnected. no aligning tool necessary, clutch is bolted to motor.
If you can't beat them, drop the top and pimp by 'em!

If you have any doubt about the age and/or condition of your current clutch, consider a new clutch while the trans is out. Some kits come with an alignment tool, check in advance. These clutches are an inside out design as compared to most, no easy way to fake an alignment tool from a dowel and tape.

3 Mounts and linkage bushings have already been suggested, I concur.
I'd also suggest fresh oil seals on the engine rear main, trans input shaft and clutch pushrod. Throw a fresh clutch cable at it too, get all the rubber hardware bits for the trans end of the clutch cable.

You sure need a triple square (male) socket for the CV joints. Flywheel to clutch cover bolts also require a 12 point (female) socket, 9 mm ?
