You'll also have three of the four engine/trans mounts off, plan on at least the front and rear new. The driver's side will cost a little down time to either fabricate tooling or take the bracket and new mount to a shop with a press.
Not only that but buya short shifter kit and a shifter rod billet and you will be amazed how much smoother the shifting is....

I agree, replace the mounts, you will be happier for it.

Thanks, I've had a short shift kit for a few years now and been waiting to get around to install it... this is a good opportunity. Thanks all.

I have nothing useful to add except a correction: The 1987 Cabriolet came from the factory with a 9A trans; the '84s came with 4K transmissions.

Actually that is useful, I've been wondering about that as the 9A in my 87, is an 84 based on its code. But then again it could also be a replacement. Do you know if the 87 Cabriolet 9As were coded for that year?

North American Cabriolets came from the factory with the following manual trans specs:

1981 model year: FF
1982-1983 model years: FN
1984 model year: 4K
1985-1987 model years: 9A
1988-1989 model years: ACD
1990-1993 model years: AUG

There is some overlapping in the production runs; therefore, some cars early in the production run still had the previous year's parts, and vice versa (some cars towards the end of the production received the new model year's parts). Despite this, the 9A transmission is stock for the USA 1987 model year. Had a 1984 trans been swapped in, it would be a 4K, not a 9A.

Great info, thanks a lot!

So would you recommend I replace my 9A with an AUG, just because it's likely to be newer? There isn't too much difference in the ratio... I really want to keep it stock, I'm trying for a concours restoration at some point so I want it all factory original.... Think I just answered my own question.

Thanks though all!
