Black GTIs received, in some cases, red pinstriping just above the side trim; the side trim itself, on an A1 VW, has never been red. I've seen people paint the entire trim, paint just the center strip, or simply run pin striping down the center strip.

But, yeah, I think it's time to throw up the 'ole:

Pix - 92 cabby with red/black moldings

Post by 82and92 »

I'd love to send a picture of the nearly-new 92 with red and black moldings - but don't have a site to link to. Any ideas or help for the novice? I have a digital photo but have no site to link to.

The car is a one owner local car, owned by a delightful lady in her mid 70's. She reports that everything is original - just like when she bought it in 1992. The car has 47,000 miles on it. The red and black side moldings baffled me as I had never seen them before. Not a limited production or really high end cabby (no leather, cruise, or alloy wheels) but a nice original that was well maintained driven around town, and garage kept for 13 years.

That looks real well done. Certanly not a driveway special. It does look as if it could be OEM, but we have pretty well agreed it is not.

Therefore I will summise that it was dealer done.

It looks great and that is a nice looking car.

I've been saying this a lot lately, but, once again, ditto! :D

The dealer may have simply wanted to spice up that cute little base model. 8)

Thank you all for your thoughts on the 92's red insert trim.

As far as the 82 goes....No pix of the 82. She's hurting a little. Another white automatic cabby. red leatherette interior, white top. Really was in decent shape (ametuer paint job and body work though) till a small deer ran into the front end ruining the hood, denting the fender and bending in the radiator support panel. No motor damage. Poor little car (license plate is TOY CAR 3). Only has 78,000 miles on her and interior is good. Top is good but stiching on edging is coming loose. Put new springs, struts, alternator, exhaust and catalytic on it last yaer.....but just can't see making too much more of an investment in it.

Car runs pretty well (but alwas runs rich) and is fun to drive around town - think it's time to sell her though. She has no air or power steering (this was a plain Jane) so she's easy to work on (if one knows how) but the new 92 is just lots easier to drive and seems totally reliable, with just 47,000 miles on her and now rust she just seems the better candidate to hold on to.. Hate to junk the 82 as I have some money in it....found a replacement hood, 2 light grille and NOS fender off a 90's cabby and good radiator support panel (think it fits but is from a newer cabby) but haven't gotten the work done. If anyone's interested - she's in Bay Village, Ohio (outside of Cleveland) and I'm open to a fair offer. Shame to let her go, just gotta stop somewhere.
