fuel gauge not working

The fuel gauge doesnt work. Any possibilities?

If it's only those two things it would have to be the voltage stabilizer in the cluster. I don't know what's involved in swapping it.

Does the water temp gauge work too, or is it dead also?

Yes as matter of fact, I have the Luck o'the Irish...everything I touch turns to fertilizer of the bovine variety.

Im in the process of buying this car. The guy says everything works but the rpm and gas gauge. :/

sounds l;ike the dash will have to come out, and you will need to repair the cluster ground, and possible replace the voltage stabilizer...The tach and gas gauge are controlled by both as well as the water temp gauge.

It isn't hard or expensive... just time consuming.

Ground wires are using a scotch lock to the number 2 brown wire, screwed to the frame.
Voltage stabilizers are from mouser electronics order 4 or 5 as the shipping is about 7-8 bucks yep .64 each.... or you can order one from VW or Autohaus @ 33.00 each.
