The 4 position on the Fan switch

Post by Briano1234 »

Since I have bought this cabby there have been a ton of things that I have had to put straight, and today I finished the final problem.

The 4th position on the fan didn't work, it was totally turning off power to the a/c when you switched on the 4th speed of the fan.

Well I had power at the switch ( but I changed it out to verify).
And all the Fuses were okay.

I had replacement relays for all but the a/c.

I took it out and verified that the contacts and the pins were all correct. I even went and re-soldered them all.

So today when I discovered that my Heater Valve was in the on position even tho the thing showed shut, I had to go to the "Yard".

I got a 1982 rabbit gated heater shutoff switch, and a number 13 relay.
So I decided to try it in.. and presto that resolved the 4th speed not working.

So recapping

A/C worked in all positions max, a/c, floor, and defrost.
The Fan would work in 1,2, and 3 speeds
All the Fuses were good.

Relay 13 was bad.

So all I have left is to install the vent windows that I got at the yard for 10 bucks. Of course I have to recondition them a wee bit, but hey for 5 bucks each ya can't beat it.

yeah me too, but my switch markings go to 4, switch stops at 3. I was told it had to do with A/C and and non-A/C cars.
I just know shit..........

VW used 3 speed fans and 4 speed fans. During my junkyard raids I've scored a handfull of both. I even have a 3 speed switch with 5 contacts on it!! Heavans knows what it's used for...

Correct. Cars equipped with A/C have a 4 position switch, while cars without A/C only have a 3 position switch.

I confirmed this with my owner's manual.
