Motor Mounts? HD vs Poly???

Post by VWnoob »

Hey guys, I want your opinion on motor mounts.
I noticed that my car shakes a when shifting gears so I did some investigation and found that my front mount is toast.
I was doing some shoping for a new mount and found 4 different types.
1. OEM stock mount
2. Heavy Duty
3. Techtonics Tuning Racing mount
4. and Polyurathane

Which is best (aftermarket) mount for performance and everyday street use?

I was really looking at the last 3 and on Parts4vws.com, the Poly is $10, the HD is $15 and on TechtonicsTuning.com the Racing is $20.

Go with anything but the poly mount. Poly should really only be reserved for race setups where you don't mind feeling enough vibration to make a milkshake.

I would go with the HD or TT mount if you really want to beat on the car a bit for fun.

I have heard that the Techtonics racing mounts are harsh.

Poly would probably be too much also.

I used OEM in mine and it lasted about 6 months.

I'm about to try heavy duty.

Are you talking the front mount by the timing cover or the front mount by the radiator?

The front mount under the radiator.
On mine, the rubber is torn and hanging out. Whenever I shift, the car shakes.

I think ill just go with heavy duty then. I dont want crazy vibration but I do want something more stiff to be able to handle quick accels.

Ill probably be getting the rear tranny mount to compliment the front too.

Thanks for the help guys.

Check the "true" front mount by the timing cover also. When I discovered the mount by the radiator was screwed up I also looked at the big one and she was toast too.

Really? I better check that one better.
I took a look at it but couldnt really see it. its kind of blocked.
How do I fully check it without having to disconnect it?

if your doing motor mounts it's best to do all 4 at the same time, there cheap. that way you know when they were done last. just remember the passenger and driver sides have to be pressed in and out of there mounts.
If you can't beat them, drop the top and pimp by 'em!

don't let em get too bad tho, mine was getting bad and i meant to replace it, well it decided i wasn't moving fast enough and the rubber came off, it dropped that metal arm right ontop of my lower radiator hose and broke it real good.

Noob, put a pry bar down between the right strut tower and something solid on the motor and pry sideways and up and down. You should only get 1/4" or so movement, any more and it's weak. Yes it is hidden and they are no fun to replace. If you haven't done your timing belt yet, this would be a good time to do it, because your going in that deep. The mount is pressed into a holder that is bolted across the face of the motor. It's not that bad, but if you don't have a press you need to start Friday night and have the mount out so you can hit the machine shop first thing Saturday morning. Or you can drive cross country and do it in my garage anytime.

Some large automotive parts stores still have machine shops either attached to them or that they use regularly and they would have Saturday hours.

I haven't looked for one in awhile because I don't need one. :-)

i always take mine to NAPA. they charge me like $10 a side to press in/out.
i have that 1/2 ton arbor press, i got it to do motor mounts.... that was a waste of money! i need a much bigger press to do that. it didn't even budge them!!

Aw man! Sounds like a pain! I think I'll just take the drive.... 8)
I'll give that test a shot and report.

I still need to do the cold start tests as well. Havnt had any time to do them when the car is cold.. Ill post the results.
