Power steering belt squeel

Post by Onceler »

Hi. I haven't posted here in awhile due to my wife's cabby being in hibernation. I've had a problem with the power steering belt squeeling ever since we bought the car. It's a 1992 cabby.
I've finally got around to looking at fixing it and I've found that the power steering pump pulley is mis-aligned with the crank pulley and water pump pulley. It is pushed out away from the engine by about 5mm. I've tried loosening the bracket and pushing it as far back in the slots as possible, but it didn't make much of a difference. Any ideas?

92 has the pulley by itself
There are 2 separate crank pulleys
crank-water pump-a/c one belt

Crank - power steering.

hmmm...interesting. Mine has 3 belts total.

1 Crank-water pump-AC
2 AC-Alternator
3 Crank -water pump-PS

I'll try to post a picture

This is a view from the top. You can see the mis-alignment on the power steering pump pulley compared to the other pulleys.
Image
This is a view from the bottom. It shows the mis-alignment also.

This is also a view from the bottom showing the overall layout of the pulley's. I do not have the power steering belt installed in these pictures, but when it was installed, it went around the crank pulley over to the water pump and then down to the PS pump. Any thoughts?

Run it from the crank to the power steering pump only.

Some one must of done a retro change, as on my 89, 90, 92, and 93 they have a 2 pulley crank, a single pulley on the water pump and the power steering.

About the best shot I have showing all three belts.

Here is the power steering to crank, my ps pump is being removed that is why it is a tad off.

I see. I must have an oddball water pump pulley at the least. But I'll go get the right PS belt, I think that should fix the sqealing since the belt only has to wrap around 2 pulley's instead of the 3.
Thanks for your advice and pictures, Briano! I'll post back with the results.

Well, that didn't work.

The water pump pulley is in the way. Looks like I'll have to find the right water pump pulley.
I still don't understand why the power steering pump pulley is offset from the crank pulley. But oh well I'll find the correct water pump pulley and go from there.

I suppose you will need to source a single pulley for the water pump that is if yours isn't 2 piece, where you could take it apart to separate.

Well, I bought the right pulley and when I took apart the old pulley it was actually 2 pulleys with the outer pulley, I found, came from a 1993 model and the single pulley left was the original 1992 pulley. Anyway I put it all together with the right single pulley and correct belt....No more squeal! I still don't understand why the power steering pump is offset and not aligned with the crank pulley, but at this point I don't care cause it works great! Anyway thanks for all you're help Briano! your pictures and advice were spot on.
