Will it live?

Post by neilson3031 »

My 1981 Rabbit Conv, ran very well up to last week.
The igniton coil was shot so I replaced it,the car ran for the day.
The halls unit was cracked, I replaced the distributor, the car
started, and ran. I shut it off and started it again. I let it run
for awhile, I shut it off and added some oil, now the car won't
start again. Any ideas, any one?

If what PDX there said, didn't work, always start with the basics. Pull a spark plug, shove it in the plug wire. Have an assistant try to start the car while you (using insulated pliers os something similair) hold the plug close to the block and check for spark. It's best to try this in a dark area so that you can actually see the spark.

If you are getting spark, time to check things like timing and fuel/Air mix I think.

If you do not get spark, then it's time to look at the hall sender/coil. Hall senders are very twitchy and don't tolerate much at all.

Now just to maybe help us trouble shoot a bit more, does the car sound like it's trying to fire at all? Are you getting a small stumble but not a complete fire?

If you don't mind me asking, what made you condemn the old coil?

Thanks, will try.

The resistance on the old coil was pretty high, that's why I changed it.

I do have spark, and gas, most times it does not seem to want to do any thing do turn over, every once in awhile it will give a little stumble.

Off to stare at it some more.

OK, I got it running, although I don't really know what the problem was.

But I guess I can put that for sale sign away for now!

Thanks for the ideas and suggestions. This is a really great site...

I will be posting some pics of my cabby in the near future.

Glad to hear you got it running. One thing you may want to check into is the Thermo-time switch. Those can go a bit wacky and cause cold/hot starting problems. If the issue continues, check that little bugger out and see what happens. If the thermo switch isn't it, I'd start looking into it being a timing or fuel/air mix issue.
