New valve cover gasket didn't stop oil leak

Post by StephanieGA »

Daughter's car had an oil leak. Seemed to be coming from valve cover. Hubby replaced gasket. Still leaking. Oil seems to be leaking from the timing belt end of the cam shaft area. Hubby says he can't tell for sure until he takes off the timing belt cover.

Any ideas? Oil leak is pretty significant.

Yes, if that is the 3 piece seal kit, then it is prone to leaking at that end, and from the back side.

The issues that you usually see on theses guys is that if you don't have the Valve cover down tight enough
then the engine gases can force the gasket to move, and then leak.

The Better Gasket is from Victor-Reinz
It is for a 1990 VW Corrado 1.8L 8V engine
Victor Reinz number 71-31692-00
VW 037-103-483c

This is a "One-Piece" metal, centered rubber gasket, it is "DA" BOMB....
You will also need eight (8) non-shouldered studs to use this gasket, and that I got at "TrueValue" hardware store in the Metric "pic-a-nut" section.

He says yes, it was a 3 piece cork set. He was thinking cam shaft seal but I told him what you said. She's leaked a quart of oil in 5 days so it is a pretty significant leak.

Baker Import parts in Duluth can get it, there is also a Baker in Marietta.
With that number I suspect that Napa or any good local shop could order it.

It is also avail at www.germanautoparts.com look for the upgraded kit.

The kicker is the non-shouldered studs..... You have to use them with the new gasket.

Yes, he was curious about the non shouldered studs. It may be self explanatory when he looks at the how to you url you sent but he hasn't looked at that yet.

It appears the upgraded gasket comes with shoulder less studs? Take a look and let me know before I order.

Oh, I stand corrected. They figure S&H after packaging and then let you know. Shipping is almost as much as the gasket itself. How is that possible? Have I mentioned I hate S&H charges?
Probably won't be using this company again. :(

But, gasket is on its way and hopefully, fingers crossed, oil leak will be a goner soon.

I have had very very good luck with Germanautoparts. If you read the site they are only passing along the actual cost. Fuel is high and yes on a $10 gasket shipping will be almost as much as the part. I bought the valve cover gasket and stacks of parts from them and am a very satisfied customer. That valve cover gasket if installed corectly is good one.

That's one of the caveats of ordering online. Some companies, like AutohausAZ, don't charge shipping but it's only for orders of $50 or more. You are paying the company for the part you need along with the delivery service that's getting said part to your door. Why should the part supplier eat the cost of shipping? If GAP offered free shipping on everything, the cost would simply be passed on to us in the form of higher part prices. Don't be mad at GAP, be angry at speculators and oil companies keeping fuel prices high.

Here's something to make you feel a little better: I recently looked up oil drain plugs (the van needs one in a special size thanks to Jiffy Lube stripping the original hole threads -- PO took it there the day I picked the van up; they learned a valuable lesson). There's a company online that supplies all sorts of plugs and I found a couple that would work. The price of the plugs were about $1.25 each, but shipping starts at $8.95. :banghead:

My beef is their policy is not stated plainly upfront. Or, if it is, I missed it. Had I know about shipping and chose to order any way, that's one thing. But I wasn't given shipping charges until a couple of days after the order was placed. I definitely would have shopped around or even tried to source locally.

I know they say they only charge actual shipping, but if Fed Ex is charging them $11 to ship something small and lightweight like a gasket, then they need to start shopping for a cheaper shipper.
