16v oil pump for 8v engine

Post by 84Raggit »

Is there a 16v oil pump (from which 16v engine) can be used to replace the oil pump in my 8v without modifications or longer bolts, deep pan, etc.?

When I bought my 84 Rabbit vert, I noticed the oil light flashed some at low idle speeds, went away at about 1100RPM. Recently, it seems to have gotten a little worse, needing about 1400 RPM, so I'm thinking the oil pump may be running out of useful life. I know it could also be the oil pressure sensor, high Arizona temps lately and/or too thin oil, but if I'm going to get a new pump, it might as well be the 16v unit, but I'm not sure which.

Thanks in advance.

8V pumps are different from 16V pumps. So, if your car still has the 8V in it, you cannot use a 16V pump. The 16V pump has a splined shaft. The 8V pump has a peg on the top of it which is used to turn it.

What you want is the high-flow pump used in hydraulic lifter 8V engines (along with the mounting bolts): http://www.germanautoparts.com/Volkswag ... gine/151/1 .

When I installed the 3 "higher-flow pump" on my various cabbies I used the same bolts, there is no need to use the "extended" bolts.

1980-1987 Cabriolet 8V engines will require the longer bolts. They have solid lifters w/o high-flow pump from the factory.
1988-1993 Cabriolet 8V engines will not require longer bolts. They have hyrdo lifters w/ high-flow pump from the factory.

Excellent. The guy I bought it from said I'd need to replace it with a 16v unit. Proves that not even "experts" are always right all the time.

Thanks a bunch.
