Turns over but no start, with clicking

Post by Hoppy »

A few times recently I got in hoppy only to find it would turn over but not start, it also made a clicking noise from under the dash while turning over. Then a few days later I would try again and it would start fine. Now I dont trust it for fear of leaving me stranded but dont not know where to start looking for the problem as it is intermittent, any thoughts what it could be.

Clean your grounds, then i would re-seat or replace the fuel pump relay.

From the battery to the frame, and from the frame to the engine for starters.

Well, half the folks I have talked to have had intermittent electrical issues or fuel issues, that having good grounds has resolved.

Riddle me this, What does Good Cup of Coffee, Divorces, and Electrics all have in common?

They all start with good grounds...................

Good riddle. Well laying by the fuel pump with my hand on it having my daughter turn the key to start (first try of the day) I did not feel or hear a peep from the pump, fuse is good, so looks like I will be replacing it and the tank one as well (bread & butter). Bugs me how expensive they are.

You can jumper the relay to see if the pumps run. Pull the relay and use a wire to connect the two big slots in the socket, the ones for the tabs marked '30' and '85' on the relay. It's easier to hear what's going on this way, and you can go back and check each pump individually by pulling the wire connectors.

Nothing happens when I jumped 30 & 85, should there be 12v at either or both?

I think I told you the wrong numbers, there. It should be 30 and 87, instead, I think, but the easiest way to identify them is by looking for the two slots in the socket that are bigger than the others. 30 should have 12V on it at all times; any terminal numbered 30 in these cars is a 12V source.

I went with the two biggest ones as you stated, didnt really look at the numbers.
