vr6 swap into an A1 causes a few issues. Nose plow being the first tht you will notice. Then no room to work on a damn thing and soon enough, the stress fractures in the front support area.

Basicly any swap you do, you really should reinforce the fron support. Though you could always opt for a big american V8 if you truely must have beefy exhaust, heh.

how hard is it to install the 1.8t into an 86 cabby? i'd rather work with that than a 16v.

you'd be better off doing a 16vT, the 1.8T is a pain in the ass, cause you have to swap the pedal cluster cause it is drive by wire (in other words the gas pedal is electronic, so no cable) it's definately doable, but you have to have a big brain between your ears to iron out the kinks
