Post by lowredcabrio »

Just a quick question, today something must have broke with the PS system. Apparently, all the fluid has leaked out. here is the question my dad asked me to ask here, can he drive without any PS fluid in there or with that damage the pump? Please, just a quick question! Can I drive?!

Yes you can drive with a empty system, and yes you can damage the pump. The question is where is it leaking a hose or pump or res is an easy fix the Rack is a horse of another color. The pumps are pretty hardy and are readily avail in the bone yards. I got a used pump for my greenie but it was the hose that was loose, and I replaced the pump anyways.

Yes as matter of fact, I have the Luck o'the Irish...everything I touch turns to fertilizer of the bovine variety.

First question Lucas is... Where is it leaking from?

If you have the same cold snap we are having in Calgary (-30 tonight) It wouldn't suprise me if the hose failed. But lots of other things can happen too.

Running dry will eventually ruin the pump. If the pump drive belt doesn't drive anything else, you can cut the belt and remove it so the pump doesn't turn and go without power steering until it's fixed. I did this on a Volvo once when I blew a power steering hose 600 miles from home.
