Radiator replacement in Mk3

Have you done so much to the car today that it just doesn't fit into one section, or are you too damn lazy to split it all up? Either way, this is the section for you.

Radiator replacement in Mk3

Post by sixsracing »

Put a radiator in my 94 Jetta over the weekend, all kinds of fun. Would have been easier if the parts store paid a little more attention to the footnote that read, "match by visual". Got the radiator out about 9:45 Friday night, oops the new one is four inches short. Had to go to the dealer with the production date, the VIN and the old one. There were three different rads. in 93 and 94 std. transmission Jettas, Who new? Anyway, the radiator doesn't come out from the top, you have to support the engine and drop the front crossmember with the motor mount in it, then unbolt the fan shroud as well as the condenser from the radiator. Slips out nice after that. Easier job if you take the grill off also. It looks like if the car didn't have A/C you might be able to squeak out the top, but that remains to be seen. I have never seen a radiator have to come out the bottom, first time for everything. Oh yeah, it doesn't sit in the car straight either, it's farther forward on the right side so it sits at an angle to the core support, very strange. Other than mowing the lawn thats about all I got accomplished on vehicles this weekend.
