Weird Science
I have this '87 Cabby under reconstruction. When I bought and picked it up and subsequently (before I decommissioned the electrical system) I had to boost it to start. About 50% of the time, the car would stop instantly as soon as the booster cables were disconnected. It would start fine, run sweet, but refused to work at all if the cables were disconnected. Anyone got a notion on this?

Re: Weird Science
Bad battery.
Bad cables Clean all your grounds.
Bad alternator.
I would have the battery checked.
Then clean all the grounds on the car from the battery to the frame, from the frame to the Tranmission, from the valve cover to the firewall.

Re: Weird Science
I would look at the voltage regulator.
It is just two screws connecting it to the back of the alternator.
Measure the brushes, if they are less than 5 mm long it needs to be replaced.
The cost about $15 new at Auto Value in Calgary.
Secondly, when the car is running, what does the Volt Meter read.
If the meter reads > 13.5 Volts the charging system is good.
If > 12 V but < 13V. Tighten the drive belt by adjusting the alternator.
If < 12V I would suspect the altenator/voltage regulator.

Re: Weird Science
Do your battery cable clamps have a good grip on the battery posts? Mine fractured and got loose. The clamps are kind of cheap, stamped-copper things. I replaced them with better ones from the local auto parts store.
