Gauge / Radio swap

Have you done so much to the car today that it just doesn't fit into one section, or are you too damn lazy to split it all up? Either way, this is the section for you.

Gauge / Radio swap

Post by Little Betty »

I would like to swap the gauges and the radio in my '87 Cabby. Has anyone ever done this before, and is there a thread I can review?
Thanks

First Welcome to TRF.

It's all good folks here. Though I might mention that it would be cool if you post a picture of your car before too long.

Yes, trading gauges and radio has been done and somebody here did it and posted pictures about a year or so ago.

Maybe Calimus or Brian can remember.

It shouldn't be too hard, I think the bigest issue is to make sure the radio wiring can reach down to the centre consoe, other than that, it should be easy.

We aren't too particular.

You could go to the Virtual car show thread viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1231

Or just start a thread in the Topless Pics folder.

I did that swap a few years back. There's a thread on the Vortex about it. Works fairly well. http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=2394097

Final result (radio isn't pushed in as far as it could go.)

Interesting gauge positioning, there. I've known people who liked to twist them so all the needles pointed straight up or straight across under normal driving conditions, but there seems to be some other theory at work here... ;)

Yep, the theory of gravity! None of the gauges were tied down at the moment and were rotating any which way they desired.
