Today a buddy brought over his wifes 1978 Super Beetle Vert, 1 owner 68K..................She bought it new..........
I have to redo the dash wiring that got fried.
Any one know how to remove the Dash on the Beetles?
I know a pic would be nice, but I don't have a camera.......

I'm not entirely positive that the dash is removeable. I thought the air-cooleds had their dashes welded in?

Re: In my Garage
Most of the wiring for the dash is accessible from the trunk. If the car has as few miles as that one then the cardboard covers are still there and obstructing your view. What got fried?

Re: In my Garage
He removed and re-installed the radio, it fried a wire with re or orange or yellow (hey its burnt)......it appears that he tied it to the power for the lower shifter light I think.
So what with that said.... I haven't looked to hard at it, but i will get it fixed.....

I believe I have the wiring diagrams for that vehicle if you need them. Thr great aspect of the early VW's is simplicity.

Re: In my Garage
Well I found out a few things, he had inadvertently connected the radio light to frame ground, which is fine until you turn the lights on then the tremendous amount of smoke that is stored into the wire is allowed to escape.
It didn't "pop" the fuse as the wires for the dash lights all burned back to the headlight switch and the melting of the dash light pot opened the circuit saving the fuse... melted the bejeezers out of the switch tho...
I have the radio rewired with "Murphy proof" connections, got the wires to the door speakers repaired, the top is fixed, and the vent window latch has been replaced.
Going over this car is really nice, how many 78 beetle verts have you seen that have never been in a wreck... It has really been taken care of.

Re: In my Garage
Wowsers, I hate working on wiring issues when you can't get to them fully.
The new switch that I ordered Thursday arrived today.
RE-ran new wires to the speakers, replaced those too.
Re-wired the burnt parts, went to Pull-a-part to get them small teeeny tiiiiny spads, no one had any.
Replaced the burnt out bulb.
Tried to see if it worked and the battery clamp was shot...run to the store get another.....
Re-connecting the radio (murphy proofed it) one side wasn't loud....
Took the radio out and all apart, and re-soldered all the connections on the circuit board... replaced and presto it works great on both sides......
Now the 64 dollar question should I wire it to a switched source, or leave it were it is...
