Fuel pumps are pains in my @$$holes

Have you done so much to the car today that it just doesn't fit into one section, or are you too damn lazy to split it all up? Either way, this is the section for you.

Fuel pumps are pains in my @$$holes

Post by Calimus »

Yea, I finally watched Borat, hence the title.

So I've been fighting a fuel pump issue with Cristines rocco (cabby has so far behaved itself the longest period ever) which I'm pretty sure I've mentioned in a few of the threads around here.

About 2 weeks ago, Cristine drove the rocco into work, but it died just short of the goal. I cam to the rescue, handed over the Jetta and managed to limp the rocco home. Main (external) fuel pump sounded like a strangled goose. That weekend, I find my spare pump and swap it out. I test drove the car and while this pump would make some noise every now and then, it seemed alright. The car sat for a week and then she tried to drive it to work again. Almost made it too. Stalled out a tad closer to work, so she remembered what I told her (give it a few min to cool off, restart and then don't let the rpm's drop below 1500) and got the crate to work.

I drove the car home, pump making the same noises as the last one. Then Brian came to the rescue with a nice 10 year old pump from his white parts cabby (10 year old pump Vs the 23 year old spare that I had, tough choice). So a trip to Duluth was made last saturday and the warm hospitality of Brians yard O' Cabby was had. Thanks to mother nature, I couldn't install the pump till Monday after noon. Pump installed, I hit the key, heard the main pump, but this time the transfer pump was silent.

Side note, God hates me or the car does, one or the other.

Lucky for me, I had the fore-sight to purchase a brand new transfer pump a year ago for some wacky reason I can't remember. Anyway, thanks to mother nature again, I couldn't install the pump till tonight. I did indeed find the transfer pump to be dead as a doornail. Intall new pump, turn key, the lovely sound of two pump humming filled the cabin. I had Cristine cycle the key a few times to get fuel back into the lines, then had her start the car. To my delight, both pumps are humming as they should. It's a very soothing sound. Took the rocco on a test run and all seemed to be well. Damn thing is even starting easier so thats a plus.

So the car is all ready to be put back into service tomorrow since we work different schedules for the rest of the week, but I'm told I'll be taking the rocco and she's parking her ass in the Jetta. I can't imagine why

damn, glad you got her fixed.

sounds kinda like the problem i had this week.
the reason i had an un-planned vaca was monday morning i went out to go to work in the caddy, turned the key and nothing!
no dash lights but everything else worked, so after i called my boss to get the week off i started tearing the dash apart.
found there was no power to terminal 30 on the ignition switch. must be a fusible link somewhere, i looked for 2 days and gave up.
i just ran a hot wire from the battery to terminal 30 and everything is golden. :)

i'll check everything out and fix it right at a later date.
If you can't beat them, drop the top and pimp by 'em!

Glad to be of service sire William..........

Now I got to start on the Green Bunny today, as the shock as starter arrived yesterday. I will however remove the o2 sensor prior to starting my pb-blaster on the manifold niuts and the down pipe............

After the test run into work this morning, I think I can say that the rocco is back on track.

Brian, thanks again for Der Pump. I'm still thinking about hand delivering those stickers on Saturday. :P

What is it about you and VWs William?

It seems that they all crave your constant attention. If it's not Crabby Cabby, one of the Roccos demands that wrenches be applied.

Oh man, don't even start me on that subject. My rocco never really asks for anything. I just deside it's time to work on stuff. Cristines cars demand attention like a 2 year old.

Funny you should ask Nick....no I haven't. While tricky, it's been working. However, this ordeal with the pump and all the re-starting while hot has really put the starter in peril.

I'm hoping to get the engine dropped out my rocco this weeken, once I do, I'll just take my starter and put it into cristines rocco. I'll pick up another starter for mine in a few weeks.

Cristines still has that idle burp as well, I'm still beffled by that. I'm thinking about swapping ecu's and see if that might be the issue since I won't be needing the one from my rocco anymore.
