A gathering of parts sources

Have you done so much to the car today that it just doesn't fit into one section, or are you too damn lazy to split it all up? Either way, this is the section for you.

A gathering of parts sources

Post by Calimus »

Ok, so there's been some small work going on and the passing on of parts sources. I thought it might be a good idea to gather up a list of parts sources that we have actually used and trust and post it in a sticky thread. I want to avoid sources we haven't used just yet. Go with what we know at first, then we'll add new sources for folks to try and report on.

I'll start with a list of my trusted sourced that I have bookmarked here at work and then continue when I get home.

I must say, this is one of the best parts source ever!! Which reminds me, I really need to get the measurements for my windscreen for a custom Kammy one-off storage bag.

I haven't forgotten about your special request, Cristine! :D I've got a windstop as well now. If yours rolls up like mine, I've already got the measurements. ;) Mine is going into temporary storage and I'll be making a bag for it, hopefully next week, if not this weekend. I'll make yours at the same time. 8)

The Bus Depot
http://www.busdepot.com/
You do have to be careful to read the application notes in their catalog. Their search engine sometimes pulls up stuff for the wrong year. I recently ended up with a Digifant fuel filter instead of a CIS one, that way.

Sells a great A1-chassis shift linkage kit. Shortens the throw, reduces slop, and adds adjustability.

Great list for what I've found is new parts generally. I haven't moved into performance parts yet. I will use it if I need newer parts. :D

I am just trying to get a stock part for a 1992 Cabriolet I know from all the contacts (alot on these lists) I've made my part has to come out of a salvage yard. Or someone who specializes in VW 's of that year and vintage.

How about a list of VW used parts or salvage yards. Some salvage yards that specialize in VW's and know their stuff are great to work with. Alot of them don't know what you're talking about.
Here's a good one in my area- Blake Import Auto Salvage, Erire, Colorado ph ( 303)665-4312 and A & F Salvage Greeley, Colorado ph (303) 353- 8300.

While these guys didn't have my part , a vacuum servo for the air recirculating defrost flap for my 1992 Cabriolet, they have a great inventory of other parts for older vintage VW's. Best in our area. Blake's has converted old yellow school buses to parts storage and they have two buses with shelving throughout organized by part. Quite fun to browse around in. They keep the engines , wheels , etc seperately.

Any ideas on anyplace to call would be appreciated like local salvage yards in your area that have a good inventory of VW's. These vehicles are just hard to find used parts for like the one I'm looking for. :?

There is no servo that does that. The center/defrost servo does that pushes the air out the center or the defrost vents depending on where you have it selected. The defrost mode is where it is by default.

The Fresh /Recirc servo is under the hood, by the passenger strut tower, it is the same as the defrost/center servo.

The best ones are metal off of mk1 vw's in the yard. My rule of thumb is that if they don't hold vacuum by using the vac tube and using your lungs to pull it, that is they need to pull and hold vacuum for about 10 seconds they usually aren't any good.

I don't know why the metal ones never seem to go bad, but that is my observation over 30 years of MK1 driving.....

You can't source the metal ones any more and 1stvwparts.com is a dealer out of Seattle that usually can get it.
