Time for another Alternator swap

Have you done so much to the car today that it just doesn't fit into one section, or are you too damn lazy to split it all up? Either way, this is the section for you.

Time for another Alternator swap

Post by Briano1234 »

Yep... last week the Alternator had started to whine more than my children, and I figured that I could get to it this week. Well my daughter was driving it to work, and she was about a block form the house. She came in and told the wife the car started to howl, and then there was a bang and a thump or two, the car shook then the battery light came on.

Here is the third Alternator that I have had go south.

This time Pepboys did repalce the belt for free, as this is the second belt that I have had to replace.

So with my previous record, of 5 before Iget a good one on my eagle the rabbit has now had 4 alternators since June...Gotta love them warranties.

So is this a sign that a BOSCH reman isn't up to the normal standards, or have I just gotten 2 lemons form Pepboys...........

I am getting good at replacing the belt for the alternator and tensioning the a/c.....

I feel for ya on this one Brian. I've been lucky thusfar, but I know my time is coming at some point and I will suffer the same as you, but only x3.

Hope this one turns out to be the winner. An I know exactly what ya mean about being good at replacing the alt and belt. It makes ya think when you are able to do it fast enough to start qualifiing for pitcrew's.

Key word: PepBoys. :P

I've had a Bosch remanufactured alt in my Cab for several years now; still going strong (knock on wood). Bought it at a local VW store: BAP Import Parts.

Actually on the light side, I have the answer on the Alternators.

Most of them have been sitting on a shelf for years, in my Eagles case they had the remaned date on them of 1992. So since they were not hermitically sealed and the boxes never rotated the bearing eventually had all the grease slide away from the bearing at the top, and that allowed rust to start. You can't fool mother nature and fluid dynamics.

This one seems to be holding up, as I had the light's, the wipers, the a/c and rear defroster on and it was still pulling 13V. With the blinkers on it finally dropped to 12 intermittantly.
