Well, now is the time that I start to do the little things, and decided to do my rear brakes yesterday.
Got them popped off, something didn't look right but hey you are taking them apart so what.
I really wished I had taken picks, but the wheel cylinders were so cruddy, I think they were at least as old as the car. the grease seals had started to leak, it was ugly............................
One side the cylinder came off sweetly, the other had a stripped out allen.
So I figure, knock the guts out of it, insert BFS then Smack BFS sideways with BFH. It broke off, never underestimate the power of a tired Irishman. I was lookning at drilling the head off, but that would take time and then I would have to run cords..... I was tired....
When I went to reassemble that is when it hit me that it wasn't correct.
The spring on the Parking brake lever was missing, no wonder they acted flakey....
Run to the Yard, and I am glad I grabbed enought springs, as they were all run wrong and stretched.
So end result is I now have brakes on the rear, when I went to adjust the parking brake cable that is when i found out that there are two different cables on, one for a beetle and one for the rabbit..... So I will have to get that fixed on a future date.
As I was bleeding the system, the front Calipers were siezed....So I will just buy new ones................as knowing my luck.....
I just took the calipers and squezed the piston back as far as it woudl go, I had my son watch for air bubbles in the res...... then pumped them afew times, and squeeeeeeezzed them back again. I know it isn't perfect but the car stops on a dime and has good pedal pressure.
Funny I was looking at the maint records for the car, and the Brakes were done by a VW shop at 85K, and they say on the bill 2 rear cylinders....
1. They were originals.
2. They didn't put back all the springs.
3. They put the current ones on wrong........
Is there any wonder why I don't take my car in to have them done by the "professional's".
So looking back Shop replaced the timing belt and f'ed the crank,
Same Shop replaced the rears, and f'ed em up.....
I would be very weary of VW shop in Panama City........FLA.
Oh and when I had the Drums off, I painted them.....you guessed it Silver to match the wheels......
Side Note, I went to Autozone to get the shoes, and I am glad I inspected them, as they had been on a car, were covered in dust, and had gouges in the leading edges, that some one covered up with a black magic marker. As that was the only set, I went to the Napa Dist Center to get a set...........Alway inspect my daddy said........

Untill recently, I was positives that bunnies were the bane of my existance.
Brian, sounds like you had a hell of a lot of fun, but as always, the end result is a better running cabby. Or maybe in this case a better stopping cabby. An I bet the drums like sweet color matched.
