As soon as you disconnect all the switches (disconnect the batter first) remove your radio
Remove the a/c switches and bezel one connector on the right
Loosen the 2 screws that hold the a/c selector
3 screws on the top of the bezel
3 on the bottom
Remove the instrument cluster disconnect all the cables, there are 3 I think and the speedo cable 2 screws hold it in place.
there are 4 10mm bolts on the left and right side of the dash next to the doors.
Carefully pull the dash to you this will unclip the clips that hold the dash from the window. then work it up and over the steering wheel
Now you can get to the little servo on the right of the heaterbox
be carefull getting the old one off as you can break your divertor.
and i ain't got a spare one of them.

So basicly, you have to remove the upper dash. damn that sucks. I would have thought it be easier to remove the kneebar to get at that, but I haven't had to deal with that yet.
As for the diverter, I think I have a spare of that, so if ya do break it jimmy don't go apes*%t, just relax and know that there is prollie a spare one that can be sent.

Sucks dosen't adequatll describe the agony of the center divertor.....but pleasure at getting fresh air out thecenter vents makes it almost worth while.
Just have plenty of Lone Star Long necks to replace the fluids that are draining...have enough and you won't care that you forgot to replace the speedocable...
PS...The left side Drivers vent if remove will allow you to remove and replace the Brake/SeatBelt light if you get it on upside down. (The only connector that I have found on the cabby that isn't keyed.)

I thought that with my skinny hands and arms that I'd be able to do it with removing just the kneebar.... joke was on me. You can remove and install the servo, but you CANNOT get the servo arm onto the vent flap arm because there's too much crap in the way and the geniouses at VW decided that a keyhole would be a great idea for locking the two together . I still need to take the dash off mine to remove and re-install the new servo. For now, the center flap just kind of hangs in the middle: not closed but not completely open.Calimus wrote:So basicly, you have to remove the upper dash. damn that sucks. Jimmy (and for anyone else), this link will give you a step by step, including pics, on how to replace the servo: http://rbylsma.home.comcast.net/cabriolet/index.html . He goes to the extreme of removing the entire center vent box which you don't really need to do.

All this talk about the centre servo makes me glad that I don't have air conditioning in mine.
By the sounds of it though it is a must in the Southern US and AZ.
A good heater is what one needs in these parts.
Good luck changing it. And don't replace too much of that lost fluid until the job is done .

Re: Trying to get to center vent servo
I have the same problem. I can't find a replacement. Any suggestions would be appreciated?
I also had a heck of a time getting to it. Took me quite a while.
