Rescue Network

Post by kuklaki »

I cant remember if I ever pitched this idea or not, but the Aircooled community has something similar and i thought maybe something like this might work for the Topless crowd.

The basic breakdown of what i am suggeting would be to compile a list of owners to offer an e-mail address and to state their general location (city, state and possibly what highways you are near. No personal information such as addresses or phone numbers should be listed.

Now, before I lose your attention in this long post-let me just acknowlege that I know the TRF, much less the Cabriolet community is small. However, if this turned out to be a good idea, then perhaps the information could be linked to other forums such as Vortex, 152, etc. Also, assistance doesnt just have to be listed just to Cabriolet owners. Any A1 owner group could contribute.

ok, on to the full explanation:
(parts of the following were copied from the AIRS website)

The next time you are planning a trip, find the states you will be driving through or near and click on them individually. On each states page you will find a list of names with general bits of information about that person. (See the AIRS website for a clearer understanding of what type of information could be offered)

If they are near your route and there is time, e-mail them a message and let them know you will be traveling through their area, and what kind of VW you will be driving. They may invite you to stop in, or have coffee somewhere.

If you do happen to have problems along the route, say a busted tire/tyre or blown engine/injun, then they are also there to assist you in whatever way they can.

A.I.R.S.

Aircooled Interstate Rescue Squad

AIRS is dedicated to assisting the intrepid VW traveler (All models!) when facing the occasional breakdown (of either yourself or your trusted VW). AIRS is a loosely knit group of volunteers of varying abilities who take the time to help other drivers in need. The number of AIRS members is growing daily. There is no president, no dues, no central location, and no shows. AIRS is NOT a loan, babysitting, bail, or towing service. If you need any of those types of things you might do well to look elsewhere. But if your VW leaves you stranded on a friendly or non-friendly highway and you need help, your looking for a local "vw person" to contact because your new to the area, or perhaps you'd even like advice or help on saving yourself $500 on that next engine rebuild by trying it yourself, this is a place you can turn to when on the road or at home. Just remember...chrome wont get ya home.

To use this service, simply click on "MAP" at the top of the site, and then click on your state. You will see a list containing people in that state, who have expressed a willingness to help. If you would like to use the AIRS list for your benefit, you must put your name on the map as well and volunteer your services, whatever they may be. The other requirement is that you report bad information such as email addresses and phone numbers when using the list. Failure to keep your info updated will result in you being removed from the list! Please pay attention to whether the person has put *ONLY CALL IF EMERGENCY* and do not call them unless it is an emergency. You can assume they probably do not have time to meet and chat with you, but are still willing to help if your in trouble. To sign up, click the SIGN-UP link at the top and fill out the form. It will be posted as soon as possible. (Updates happen approx once a month.) If your info is shown on the site but is wrong, use the EDIT link. DO NOT use the edit link if you can not currently see your info on the site. to be removed from the list, send me an email
*Be sure to read the FAQ before signing up or emailing, to answer any questions you may have and ensure things go smoothly*

Been awhile but I lurk every now and then. Sign me up. I used to do this for LiMBO (Vanagon owners club) several years back. Maine is vacationland after all.

We already have that rescue network here in the Atlanta area, William gave me a crank, and I gave him a fuel pump and short shifter..(have you installed that yet?) :)

As a matter of fact I have installed it. I protected it from myself for a while, but I rediscovered it and managed to get it on there. Deff adds a nice feel to the shifter.

So yea, guess we do already have this kinda going. I have been putting some thought to this on a larger scale however. We could do this very easily and just base it totally off e-mail with a excell spreadsheet or I could put something up her on the site. Maybe password protect it as it would have phone contact info.

What do you folks prefer?

Blast from the past, Sixes, how are ya man?

Ok, so with there being a bit of renewed interest in this, I'll see if I can make a password protected area here on the forums where everyone can list their contact info.

Personal attention from the fearless leader. I am humbled and honored.
I have been well, kids are getting bigger, graduating from HS and college,
getting licenses and engaged, playing football. Business has been good, FBG
has not demanded that I get a real job yet so things keep progressing. I will
try to be a little more regular around here now, I finally got high speed and
am trying to free up a little time for other interests. Nice to hear from you and
great that you remember me.

Say hi to Kuklaki and the nest.
