Well I am fairly well versed in VW diesel.
Don't forget the fenders as your westy ones will look funny :)

im learning the diesel is a pretty easy platform to deal with, just need some specialized tools.

my rabbit has been pretty flawless the entire time ive owned it. other than it goes through brake light switches like skittles.

ive already got the majority of the parts i need to make this truck pretty much new. im ordering an injection for it on friday though

Cam and IP lock, and a Dial gauge and you are pretty much set. All the other Tools you should already own.

Then you can use the flat metal out of a Stanley Combination square for the flat bar stock, that is what I used for years.
Or get a tool off the interweb.

Cheapest I found.

To lock the ip I just used a large bolt that I found in the "extra" bolt crap I had laying about. I actually think it was a engine/tranny bolt or a bumper bolt, I can't remember
too many years and cars ago.

...But on a brighter note, the DMV waived the back fees from 2008, so my bill went from almost 900 for the back fees to 194 for everything

Glad to hear, I too once had to pay back taxes on a car to the time of the last title 3 years before I even owned it....
