Would you replace a worn Etienne Aigner interior w/ a non-EA interior?

No way! Don't mess with a collector's item like that.

1991 Etienne Aigner - solid but needs some TLC

Post by FolksWaggin »

Picked this one up for $500. She ran okay but the tires were bald, and the whole car was filthy. I cleaned her up and put on some nice 15" 7 spoke alloys (cheap, no-name wheels, but they look cool) with 205/50 15 Kumho Ecsta ASTs. I'm in the middle of adding new springs and Boge gas struts. Very happy so far - great replacement for the 1980 Rabbit Convertible I had back in the late 90s.

Thanks! I'm glad I found this site. I found it through a link to your great post on replacing the front strut inserts, which I'll be doing shortly:

And yes, I'm glad I found this one. She had been owned by two college girls over her life -- well, really by their fathers. Seems they maintained the car so their girls would be safe. I hesitated at first, even with the low price, because I wanted a 5-speed, but I'm actually having fun driving the automatic. Not sure if I'll do a 5-speed swap one day.

You do know that automatics are more rare...... less of them made.

Funny thing is, growing up in the NY metro area, and now living in CT, I'd seen so many EA editions over the years that I didn't realize how rare they were until I bought one. I'm guessing most of the daddy's-little-girl editions sold in NY, and probably California too. Makes sense.

Thanks! I haven't had the car very long, but I've had a lot of fun with it. It's Bordeaux Red -- it's just hard to tell because of the bad lighting in the photo.

P.S. I need a power window switch, if anyone knows where to find one.

I've been saving those power window switches from junk cars. I might have one for you. I'll check.

On the power window switch I was looking for one for my car. Bozo Zone Advance or Ocraplys can't get them. They are approx $60 at the stealership. I was able to clean mine and get it working again. (For now anyway). I took electical harness cleaner and spayed it through twice and then Tuff Stuff interior cleaner and sprayed that as well. It is worth a shot.

CajunSpike,
Thanks. If you find one, I'll be willing to pay a reasonable price for it.

eric4321,
I've thought about prying my switch open and seeing if I could do anything with it. It works down but not up. You think I might just be able to clean it?

My daughter's mad at me because the broken switch was originally on the driver's side, but I moved the good one to my side, and now she's stuck with the stuck window!

If the switch isn't working, you can't make it worse by opening it. Its a simple momentary contact switch.
I like his idea too.. open the broken one and check it out/clean it. Can test the results with a meter.

The switch on my 93 would raise the window but not lower it. I DID NOT pull it apart at all. All I did was shoot the cleaner in and all around it. I had to do it 3 times and it finally worked. I was going to order a new one from VW and figured I had nothing to loose.

Thanks Guys,
I'll try the spay cleaner first, and if that doesn't work, I'll move on to more drastic measures.
