Wind blocker?

Self explanitory, if you did a cool mod to the body to help performance, talk about it here and post some pictures too.

Wind blocker?

Post by gull »

I've noticed a lot of modern convertibles have some kind of mesh or plastic wind blocker to reduce the turbulence coming in from the rear. I'm curious if anyone has experimented with something like that for an A1 Cabriolet. I find it pretty pleasant up to about 50 mph, but above that it'd be nice to have a bit less wind buffeting. Rolling up the rear windowlets helps a little, but not much.

I am redoing it to make it more better, actually I am doing away with the snaps on it and making 2 straps that will hold it down I am also goingto extend the bar at the top about 2 inches on both sides to eliminate the snaps at the top. and cutting the bar at the top in half to allow it to fold smaller and fit in the trunk. I will still use the vinyl tubing to hold the bar together it will become the hinge.

They work really good weither you have the bodyshots or my cheap assed one.

Cool. That looks like a pretty good arrangement. Maybe I'll try making something similar once the weather warms up. I'm mostly interested in reducing the wind-whip around my head.

I wonder if plastic window screen material would work well? It seems like the fine mesh might cut down a lot of the turbulence while still allowing some air flow. On the other hand, the solid vinyl like you used might allow comfortable top-down touring in colder weather. Hmm.

I am not as crafty as Brian, so I bought mine from Bodi-Windschott in Germany.

It works great but for windblocking, you really do have to have the windows rolled up, which adds a slight amount of dork factor. On the plus side, I may be a dork but it keeps me from getting blinded by my hair and I can go topless in the winter.

I have long hair too, so that's a lot of my motivation. I end up tying my hair back in two places and some of it still comes around and hits me in the face. :)

The Bodi-Windschott product looks damn nice. It's too bad the dollar is so weak right now. The 89EUR version would cost nearly $120 U.S., not including shipping. That's a lot of scratch.

I cut my hair. Solved that problem. Now my hats get sucked off, when semi's pass.
The entire tool selection at Sears or the contents of a Snap-On truck will do you no good if you do not know how to use them.

That's why you need a passenger. So they can catch it when it hits them in the face! ;)

I'm still looking for the perfect convertible hat. Baseball caps let my ears get sunburned. I tried a cloth bucket hat, which is the item of choice for glider pilots. (You can get a nasty sunburn through a plexiglass airplane canopy.) Unfortunately, I found it blew off too easily.
