How tight should pan gaskets be

If you are going to go anywhere, better make sure your tranny can handle the load. Gear changes for the power hungry should be talked about here. Is that a LSD I see in your pocket?

How tight should pan gaskets be

Post by Briano1234 »

I tried to change the filter and the tranny pan gasket on a rodeo today, and it is leaking like a stuck pig from the front.

Is it possible to get the gasket too tight? and how tight should the tranny pan be? Snug, Tight, or Torque-a-matic.... there is on specified torgue in the manual for the bolts.

Cause i have to drain it and have at it again tomorrow. Should I coat it with silicone this time?

Never had this problem on a 350 turbo hydramatic.

lol

when ya pull the pan, check and see if there is any old gasket material on the pan or on the bottom of the engine or any other kind od derbis.

As for how tight, I'd range on pretty snug to tight. You can over tighten and cause the gasket to deform and not seal.

Also, what kind of gasket is it? Cork or rubber?

Yep that is what i figured I did, I just wish I hadn't put the cross member and the exhaust back on, not to mention the skid plate..lol that is my luck. Tonight my Van crapped out ( alternator) and it had to be towed home but the Little Cabby just took me whereever I needed no complaints. Now to collect parts tomorrow....I think I bought the alternator alread for the van so this one should be free.....
