What type of headers would be better?

What type of headers would be better?

Post by kda339 »

Ok I have a question for all. I found some headers for my 16v conversion as to the scirocco 16v exh manifold is hard to find in good shape, however I am trying to figure out what would be better. First of all the TT one is quite pricey, but it looks very good and the quaility is about the best i've seen and they have a good rep for good products however I found another header that is from a company that is called S&S it doesn't have the flex pipes, but it does have a ball joint type of flang/connector pipe at the cat. My Question for you all is: Have you heard of this company? If so would you recommend there header vs. TT's ? Also would this header be a better choice. I am not ruleing out the TT header, but just want to find a cheaper one that will work just the same with no problems.

All I've heard about S&S has been good. Have to agree with the comment about TT though, they are damn proud of their stuff and the price showes it.

yeah, you should be happy with it. but you get what you pay for, sure the TT piece is pricy but i'm sure its a great header that would last forever, just somthing to think about.

not with the ball socket at the end of the header. it'll take all the movement out of the header.

The S&S header does have the ball socket. They said I could cut that off and add a flex if I wanted to. Would this be something I should consider or would the ball socket work? or should I use both? As for any type of gains I know that The TT one would be the better choice for it being the 4-2-1 style. The S&S one I believe is a 4-1, but I don't know I haven't seen a pic of it. If someone could enlighten me that would be great.

the S&S is a 4-1 header. that just means you have 4 pipes merging into 1 pipe, a 4-2-1 is 4 pipes into 2 pipes into 1 pipe.

don't matter the ball socket is spring loaded and allows flexure, at least on mine it do.

4-1 verses 4-2-1 has been a debate since 1969 when the first headers for the 4 cyl. Japanese motorcycles were introduced. Every manufacturer claims better HP gains with their design. Some of the more reasonable arguments were:

4-2-1 provides better back pressure and cancels out certain exhaust "waves/pulses" that disturb proper cylinder air/fuel charging.

4-1 provides a smoother flow and breathes better.

You could read hundreds of articles but the only way to know for sure is to baseline dyno the car before and after each installation. The other problem is each car has a different cam profile and head flow. The header that works well on Lowcabs car may not work at all on my car because he has changed his cam and has a different injection system.

Sorry I couldn't throw definitve light on this, but there is none.

Well it all has been helpful I'm thinking I will take your alls advise and probally spring for the S&S header. I'm not runnning anything that is going to be extreme and even if I do go that way it'll probally end up along the line of forced induction. Again thanks for the input.
