It's quite possible that the exciter circuit wire was loose; reinstalling the alternator got the blue wire nice and tight. Faulty exciter circuit wire = no charging.boschbabe wrote:Since the alt was easy to get off, I took it to AA to get tested where it tested good. So I put it back on a it works!

Re: 81 cabby 1.7 5 speed/ bosch fuel punp (CIS)
It appears, to me anyway, that you've got the gauge connected backwards in the second gauge photo. The proper test position for a gauge in testing CIS pressure: The plain-Jane hose (i.e. without the valve) connects to the center-most port on the fuel distributor; the hose with the valve then connect...

First, welcome! 8) Second: Which Haynes or Chilton would work? For a '93, neither. Chilton's is only worthy of being kindling, and Haynes is okay if you have a CIS-era car (which your '93 is not). As Brian said, head to Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Volkswagen-Cabriolet-Scirocco-Service-Including/dp...

Re: new to this, help me.
Should I go ahead and get a new oxygen sensor while i'm at it? That would be a wise thing to do. If the oxygen sensor's age is unknown and/or it's about as old as the car, it'll destroy that new cat converter right quick (the two components go hand-in-hand). There again, I, personally, always err o...

Two are 531 K and one is 531 G. All three have the same physical pin set up as the one on the left in your picture. They appear to be electrically the same. The only difference is the icon on the switch face. The 531 G has the old style headlight symbol where the 531 K the icon is more like a light...

Re: Wet Cab - Console removal required
With my '86, I couldn't budge that console without at least loosening up the kneebar. (If your AUS-spec car has the JH, you'll need to drop the Jetronic ECU first, if you do loosen/remove the kneebar.)

Be sure the car's brakes are in excellent condition.
Bumper-mounted hitches aren't the best (safest) things in the world to use for towing. Be careful.
