Re: Starting/Running Issue
Twice I had the timing belt go bad on me while driving: once it broke, the next it jumped a tooth. In both cases, it would sit there and crank but not start. Pull the cover off and check the belt... easy thing to do for quick problem elimination, or discovery.

Re: The past week in Car repair
Today, in topping off fluids in the Vanagon and simply doing the usual pre-flight check, noticed a nice rubbery coating all over the engine bay. Then I noticed the A/C belt's ribs showing. Yes, the A/C belt got loose and flipped itself inside out. Even more :screwy: , in cleaning up the mess, I noti...

I'd get some live pics for ya, but I'll be at Buses By The Bridge (lots going on in AZ this coming weekend)... which also means missing the Vanagon Westfalia (first time for one being at B-J! ) that'll cross the stage on Wednesday.

So that others know what a Canadian Azur is: http://www.cabby-info.com/images/Models/Azur-Havanna/AzurCanada.png (Love the interior this model got!) According my research, only 250 Canadian Azur models were produced for 1988. As Phil said, they're hard to come by, but one pops up for sale now and th...

Re: The past week in Car repair
The Jetta is making a noise up front (either a pulley or a pump; haven't pinpointed which yet) Yeah, so... definitely the tensioner pulley. I was lucky to make it back from the airport over Xmas with family in tow. The bearings were completely dry! New pulley (albeit from NAPA and unlike th...

Re: No heated garage- No garage period!!
Wouldn't the long unwinding cord behind the car be a clue? Well, if Vanagon camper guys can forget to unplug their shore power... when the freakin' cord is right there as they approach the driver's door and quite visible in the mirror! Seriously, I don't get how they could miss it... :screwy: If yo...

FWIW, the Bentley diagrams weren't 100% correct for my '86. If I can find my notes from back when I replaced the speakers and wires, I'll post up the actual wire colors that were in mine.

Not that it matters, but just wanted to point out that that pipe is not only missing its cap, the upper half of the pipe has been broken off.

Re: Front/rear strut source?
Did the front housings go bad? If not, all you need is the inserts (and the springs, if the springs are shot). If the car does need the entire assembly, you can find them at German Auto Parts (they used to sell the Bilstein version, but no longer; it's possible Bilstein is no longer making them). Ot...

Re: The past week in Car repair
Nice kammy, and what is it with you and Brian having such horrible luck with the Chinese parts? Eh, it was a $12 plastic emblem with a slightly tight fit inside a grille it, technically, wasn't made for and I was able to repair it enough to stay in place; irritating, yes, but my ESP told me it woul...
