Re: Dual horn - still not 100%

Well, I'm a bit of an idiot. Figured, "hey... maybe try the simplest thing first..." Replaced the fuse and voila... the license plate lights and interior trunk light now work fine. :D

Re: Dual horn - still not 100%

That's what I was thinking. Though from just a visual inspection, the ground for the license plate light is connected to the body. I checked the bulb wires with a multimeter - showing almost no voltage.

Re: Dual horn - still not 100%

I think I finally figured it out. The horn button has at least one of the "tabs" broken. If I pull it off and just set it on the spot without snapping it in, it seems to work with no issues. I've ordered the repair kit... we'll see if that finally solves the problem. Of course, now I have an issue w...

Re: Dual horn - still not 100%

I did clean the contacts - they are nice and "shiny" now. a slight bend of the tab didn't seem to improve it. After I was getting the full blast with the wheel reconnected, I took the car out around the block. Steering wheel feels properly set - but then I was again getting absolutely nothing from t...

Dual horn - still not 100%

I'm sure this has been discussed to death, so apologies if anyone is tired of it... I ran through the tests in Bentley - as soon as I got to that tab Briano mentioned, I was getting different results. I can get a full dual horn blast now, but sometimes when I hit the horn, there is a brief (maybe a ...

Re: 1981 Rabbit Convertible... it has arrived!

Yep... direct connect works perfectly fine on all the horns (well, except the physically broken one I tossed out). Guess this weekend will be spent working on the wiring. On a related note - does anyone know if the rubber pieces that protect the connect at the horn are obtainable? I searched through...

Re: 1981 Rabbit Convertible... it has arrived!

Thanks for the tip. I was going to try the "direct from battery" test, but at the moment don't have the spare wire to connect. Trip to Home Depot after work for today. (And yeah... with the key not in the ignition, the horn does nothing - not even a "click."

Re: Your Cabriolet/Rabbit's Build Date

Interesting. I didn't realize that. I was always under the impression initial assembly was at Wolfsburg.

What all was built at the Karmann plant? The convertible, of course. I'm guessing the Scirocco, too. Were any of the Vanagons? I guess I never thought of it as a full-bore plant.

Re: Your Cabriolet/Rabbit's Build Date

Interesting. Tuesday, August 26, 1980. My VIN is relatively low - 00804. The PKN shows it was the 520th off the line that day. Seems high... did they really get 500+ cars off the line per day in Osnabrück? That would make me think the 1981 model year production started on Monday, August 25th, 1980. ...

Re: 1981 Rabbit Convertible... it has arrived!

I've got a friend who does welding. I'll talk to him and see if he's willing to look at it and fix it. Replaced the dome light and tried fixing the horn. But it's still not up to snuff. Very weak sound - but at least I'm getting a sound from both horns now. Ordered the set from mk1autohaus. Replaced...

Re: 1981 Rabbit Convertible... it has arrived!

Got the car up on the lift. Was hoping there wasn't any serious surprises. A lot of rubber underneath clearly needs to replaced (not pictured, the boots on the steering linkage are complete toast). The CV boots look to be relatively good. No cracks there, but feel like they may be at the very beginn...

Re: 1981 Rabbit Convertible... it has arrived!

The top - the top layer is about 4 years old. That spot at the top of the window is concerning. It's not torn, but the fabric pops out from under the rubber seal when it's folded down. The middle layer and the headliner willl definitely need to be looked at and eventually replaced. The frame itself....

1981 Rabbit Convertible... it has arrived!

Picked it up from the carrier about 5 miles from home. Drove home fine. Did notice some additional stuff on it that I'll have to look into (nothing major, I hope). Also I noticed another thing - It's not actually Cosmos Silver. It is Diamond Silver Metallic. I'm ok with that. When the time comes for...

Well, the last time I was at a show, there wasn't any Cabby class, and they placed them in the mk1 class....
Both the Triple Whites were spotted in the wild. Haven't seen any Cabbies participating in shows, either. I will change that. :D
