Born of Necessity.
Getting Rubie the Cabby running, means the wife likes having a car again, and very quickly loathes the bus. Problem is, her car is the primary vehicle, complete with bars for hauling around my fishing kayaks... now, the cabby is good to go on those nice days http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2403/57144...

Re: Intermittent misfire...close to being stumped, here
Soak overnight in Carb Cleaner. It can do some amazing things. I'd not rush out to replace things immediately.
as a side note: I'll be in Auburn (west hill) tomorrow night through sometime monday.

Re: The past week in Car repiar
In the past week i've learned: -my canvas top is in need of protection. It's absorbing rain, rather than repelling it. Picking up some 303 Fabric Guard tomorrow -the mk3 exhaust clamp I've been using to mate the TT euro race downpipes to the TT cat-back exhaust isn't upto the job. can't clamp down o...

Re: The past week in Car repiar
yeah, not easy. I know of a yard down here that has, last i checked, 3 dizzys. Guy at the counter said $50. Then i discovered my plug wasn't fully engaged and didn't need 'em...

Re: Strange Idle
wow, WA doesn't allow the range of RPMs that OR does then. Here they told me anywhere from 900-1200. crazy. But, of course, we don't get the rolling 25yo drop-off. As mentioned DO NOT USE BRAKE CLEANER. It's really some horrible stuff, and if there's a trace amount of argon in the air (say, welder),...

Re: Strange Idle
Don't worry about not having the plug... I've not had one since I got the gar... come to think of it, I don't think I've ever had one in any of my VWs... 1100rpm, while high, is still considered "acceptable." The the engine warm up, and start checking for vacuum leaks. A can of carb cleane...

Re: Tranny
I didn't think that was always an option... I know you can put 100mm flanges on a 4K, but you have to clearance the case on a 2H. There was a seal change in 83/84...

Re: Tranny
Yep, any 85+ Cabby, 85+ Scirocco 8v, or A2 golf/jetta 8v tranny will work and still retain the 100mm drive flanges. If you like the stubby handle, then take what you have now, cut it down to the length you desire, and re-thread. Of course, you'll need to lower your seat, and visit the chiropractor r...

Re: Strange Idle
I'd bet you're right with the timing. Turning the wheel will put an extra strain on the motor, and if the timing is off, or the vacuum leak significant, that strain can stall it

Bentley PDF
While this pertains to all sections, I'll resist cross-posting elsewhere... The Bentley Manual is ESSENTIAL if you plan on tackling any work to your cabby. Here is the Bentley Manual in PDF format. I have it all on my iPhone, which is very convenient to say the least first off is the Big file. This ...

Re: Strange Idle
oh... when sitting still... ignore the whole gas tank and fuel pump stuff... Does your car have power steering? There are a number of different things that control idle speed and its important to have a dwell meter, timing light, and, in an ideal world, a fuel pressure gauge. Idle speed is controlle...
