Re: The past week in Car repiar

I've got a new Mercedes CV drive axle assembly sitting in a box next to me. Been procrastinating that repair because it's a pain in the butt -- gotta drain the differential and remove the subframe mount and diff cover to get to the circlip that secures the inner axle stub. Probably will end up doing...

Re: The past week in Car repiar

Wow, you really found an idiot. As far as the axle nut, I've found that once they back off, they will continue to do so even with locktite. The locktite keeps it in place longer, but eventually it will let loose. If it keeps working loose you should check the splines for damage. A loose axle nut ca...

Re: The past week in Car repiar

The one good thing I'll say about the Malibu is it had a really nice brake caliper design. If you were just changing pads, you could undo one bolt and swivel the whole caliper up away from the rotor, leaving the bracket in place.

Re: Audi's take on Chevy volt

I still see that batteries as being a large issue. The cost of the packs for replacement are sometimes enough to purchase a small used car and while many can be recycled, some can't. Now at least the car makers are getting wise to this problem and most are now making the packs out of many smaller p...

Re: Audi's take on Chevy volt

I think the Volt has some potential, but the technology isn't quite there yet. It's a nice way to get around the limited range problem of electric cars, which is going to be key to making them useful in the US. I mean, sure, most people could commute in an electric car with a 100 mile range, but the...

Re: The past week in Car repiar

Worked on a friends VR6 Jetta Friday has it developed a failed coilpack the day before he has to drive out to Cali for a new job. Got to rest on Saturday and then today I changed out a fuel pump on a Chrysler Pacifica. I'd like to shoot the engineers at Chrysler for their design. Rather than cut ou...

Re: The past week in Car repiar

I'm working on the Honda's timing belt job this weekend. Because of "as long as I'm in there" factors the job has expanded considerably, but it's a three-day weekend, so I haven't been in a huge rush and plan to finish buttoning it up tomorrow. The final list will be timing belt, timing be...

Re: The past week in Car repiar

Yeah, I found getting the new core in a total pain in the tail, too...the problem is getting it lined up on the far side, since there's not much to guide it. When I was doing the job it was about 45F out and damp, I was working in an open carport and lying in the wet carpet in the footwell...not an ...

I put relays on my '89, and it made such a big difference I never got around to buying the H4s. ;)

Re: 92 cabriolet, auto

paz, I'm a bit late on this one, but it's possible the little passageway the idle speed screw threads into has gotten gummed up. Try spraying some carb cleaner in there.

Re: Warm Start/Idle Trouble - Auxiliary Air Regulator

BTW, interesting tidbit about those air regulators -- if you loosen the locknut you can see next to the hose fitting in the picture, you can side it back and forth and adjust the amount of cold idle speed boost. On my automatic I opened it up a bit to reduce hesitation during warmup.

Re: The past week in Car repiar

I have an idea for the heater core as far as the easy way, but don't like the look of the heater box after.. So I am tinkering with making a plate out of either lexan or tin to cover the hole in a more esthetic fashion. If I had the choice of ripping the dash and kneebar out to take the heater box ...

Re: The past week in Car repiar

Couple things:

- The crush washers need to be new. If you re-use the old ones they won't seal well due to work hardening.

- In tough cases, I find the seal washers with a rubber center seal much better than the bare metal ones.

Re: The past week in Car repiar

I think the luck is spreading through the Internet, actually...jacked up the Mercedes to rotate the tires, and the left inner CV joint boot split cleanly in two.
