Stripped Starter

The car I sold (93 auto) came into my son's shop with a stripping starter. When I had it it would occasionally spin without turning the engine and would make a horrible stripping sound. I thought it might be a failing starter drive because it usually would start on the next try. It got to be more fr...

Re: Rusty Fuel Line

I have my doubts that 40 PSI is needed to fill the reservoir but I might try using the transfer pump alone to see if it does the job. That way the conversion could be done for the price of 5 feet of hose not to mention eliminating having to deal with an open fuel tank.

Re: Rusty Fuel Line

I bought an Airtex E3240 ($32) with the intention to do the conversion if the reservoir cracked during the hose replacement. I poked around under there yesterday and it looks like I can get to the clamps if I remove the external pump and pull the reservoir forward and down a little. But then it dawn...

Re: Rusty Fuel Line

That thing would cost $101 if I did the conversion right. Can it be bypassed? Hook the two pressure lines together and do the same with the two return lines? Can it be moved around a little for accessibility? I won't let the daughter drive it the way it is. Not only would it quit if it ruptured but ...

Rusty Fuel Line

Has anyone ever replaced the short piece of fuel line running between some plastic box with several lines hooked up to it and the main line running to the engine? It is a short piece of metal tubing with a hose on each end. Mine is terminal. My son, who works at a shop, says it would be difficult to...

Re: Newbie with oil pressure issue

You might want to take the STP filter off the list of acceptable filters. It was the only one I could find at my regular stops. It was less than $4 but it weighed about as much as an empty soup can. It had no bypass valve so it took my puny oil pump over a minute to fill it and start registering oil...

Re: Newbie with oil pressure issue

The local VW shop sold me an Audi filter. He says to look for something just inside the filter hole. A relief valve or something. He says only use those kinds. It would seem that 'relief' is the problem. Also on this site I heard about an external cooler from a previous year that helps. Also on this...

Re: Newbie with oil pressure issue

Join the club. My daughter's '93 only has 1.5 bar at freeway speeds and .5 at idle. The buzzer ran constantly until the cluster quit. She uses it every day including long trips. Don't like it but my standards have dropped with this car.

Re: Cluster Mylar repair.

I need to do this mod to daughter's car but she uses car every day. She has had no idiot lights, temp, fuel gauge, tach since June. Alt D+ circuit with light taped to dash. Cold solder job with jumper wire last winter did not hold. When cluster was working low oil pressure alarm sounding constantly.

Re: Belt Replacement Drama

I got a brainstorm to grind the wasted alt swivel bolt into a square and bang an old socket onto it. I was able to tighten it to where the bushing slides and prevents wobble. I now have a Taiwanese 11mm socket sticking out next to the timing belt area. The original allen bolt is insufficient for the...

Belt Replacement Drama

Warned Daughty not to take this thing any farther than the nearest intersection due to inop cluster and oil pressure issues. But off to Delaware she went (100 miles). It made it there OK but on the return trip a few days later she said that the voltage was below the green range. She made it home and...

Re: Lousy Graduation Gift

I changed to Castrol 20/50 and drove around with the mechanical gauge taped to the windshield. It has 100 PSI at idle but falls quickly. It held 30 at 2 grand for a while but the temp keeps climbing, peaking at 110 C. Pressure stabilizes around 20 PSI at 2 grand. Not happy with it but I guess it won...

Re: Lousy Graduation Gift

I unhooked the battery and it went to the left but later it was back over to the right again! My son says some gauges are that way. Is there anywhere I can get a new can? Should I scrounge some from a junkyard? Does it have to be a digi?

Re: Lousy Graduation Gift

The link to the nice $42 billet unit I got is on this site somewhere. It's working so far. I know that the oil gets thinner as the engine heats up but I thought it would stabilize about the same time as the coolant but it keeps getting hotter. It peaks around 100 degrees C after about 20 minutes of ...
