Re: Dead brake proportioning valve. Replacement options?

Thanks for all of the help, guys. Now I just have to wait for the weather to warm up. There's over a foot of snow on the ground now here in KC, and it's still coming down!

Re: Dead brake proportioning valve. Replacement options?

Is this it? http://www.germanautoparts.com/images/thumbnails/dc0c3a1be6d342f0fe28b4cf4b5333a8.jpg ... I found one at German Auto Parts, http://www.germanautoparts.com/Volkswagen/Rabbit/Brake/235/5 for $155.63. Thats a bit cheaper than what you were quoted. You might start checking your local auto w...

Re: Dead brake proportioning valve. Replacement options?

Okay, the piece I am talking about is at the back of the vehicle, but I feel like you guys are talking about something in the engine compartment. This is mounted next to the rear axle. Four lines go to it. One to each rear brake, then two head forward, and I didn't trace them. I took this photo of i...

Dead brake proportioning valve. Replacement options?

Hi guys, The brake proportioing valve on my 1980 'vert recently starting leaking. I have to add fluid to the reservior every couple of days, but that's no kind of permanent solution. It's covered in rust, and none of the fittings budge when I attempt to loosen or tighten them, so I've decided not to...

low RPM, part-throttle misfire

Hi folks, The Wabbit has been behaving badly lately. I suppose after two weeks of decent running, he'd decided he'd had enough of that nonsense. So, from idle-2500rpm or so, anything under 75% or so throttle has a stumble/misfire. On the highway, cruising, it's fine because it stays above 2500 for t...

Re: Rear Window Help needed!

No wonder I've had so much difficulty closing!

I still don't think this will fix the fact that it won't latch on the passenger side, but at least it will make folding and unfolding easier, in addition to making it open completely and stay open.

Re: Rear Window Help needed!

Okay, I see what I'm missing now. The wide back straps that run next to the window are just hanging loose in the trunk, and the rubber straps that go from the main bow to the one second-to-rearmost bow are also just hanging loose. I also ran the central straps underneath that bow, which I should als...

Rear Window Help needed!

Hi guys, I just installed a new top on my 1980, but I did not have the benefit of removing the old one to tell me how everything should look. The previous owners took absolutely everything off of the top frame -- the window was wrapped in newspaper and a garbage bag in the trunk, and the hardware wa...

Re: Heavy-duty suspension?

Yeah, I've seen mister 96V, but he's got a massive budget compared to mine. Buying Bilstein replacement struts/springs ain't within my budget by a long shot. With everything I do, it has to be the most cost-effective way possible. Not the cheapest -- I don't want dangerous or unreliable, but the bes...

Tire choices

Hi guys, My 1980 still has the stock 13" wheels, and for rolling resistance/economy, I'd like to keep things small (though I do want to do the wider 175 section instead of the 155). However, I have not been able to find inexpensive 13" tires from a major manufacturer. Does anyone make them...

linkage adjustment?

Hi guys, This might not be something that's adjustable -- just a quirk, but I've got to ask. The shifter on my 5 speed feels like it's just too far forward. To shift, I have to lean forward. I have the seat adjusted so that I'm a comfortable distance from the pedals and the steering wheel, and even ...

Heavy-duty suspension?

Hi guys! The shocks on my 1980 are all pretty much shot. I want to replace them, and possibly the springs, with heavier-duty parts. The reason? I plan to eventually convert the car to electric, and the batteries will add enough weight that it will be like having a couple of linebackers in the back s...

1980 Rabbit Convertible in Kansas City

Hi everyone! A couple of months ago, my wife sent me a craigslist ad for a $150 Rabbit Convertible in pretty rough shape, but supposedly running. 105k miles only. I bought it after giving it a once-over to make sure the rust wasn't too awful. I started it up, and despite running poorly, it made it 2...
