Re: Removing the Transmission

Woot Woot! Transmission is off the engine!! Do I dare admit my ignorance? Only partly. . . I did not read that I was supposed to take the bolts off of the flywheel cover on the bottom- -I thought that was unnecessary. . . After I removed the two on the bottom, the trans slid back easily to a point. ...

Re: Removing the Transmission

Thanks again. I have the engine and transmission out of the car on a cherry picker and I lowered it to the ground on a tire so that I could pull the trans off. I am just hoping I do not damage something as I pry them apart- -it has been so stubborn that I think there is something that I missed. In m...

Removing the Transmission

Any help from someone who has been there?? I have the diesel engine out that I am planning to swap into the cabby, but I am having difficulty with finding the alignment marks to slide the trans. away from the engine. The year is a 1980 rabbit 1.5 diesel with a manual trans. I have the Bentley manual...

Re: 81 1.6 gas know how

Finally had an "Ahha" moment on this removal project. I did not know there were bolts holding on the AC bracket that were hidden behind the timing belt cover. :banghead: Now after removing everything, I am trying to create a better way to mount the alternator and to leave the AC pump off. ...

Re: Barn Find on the road again!

Thanks Phil,

This is fantastic news- -the 4-100 size. I was thinking that I would have to search the world over, or purchase customs. I think the cars look Really nice with them!

By the way- -I currently have whitewall 13's :) with stock vw steel rims. :D

Thanks again

Re: Newbie Here

Welcome EarlD!

Mine is a little older- -by about 20 years, but I like the newer ones as well. I saw a young lady driving an 02 the other day and I was smiling at her as she went by, but I was really smiling at the car- -I think she knew it was a volkswagen smile.

Any pictures to post??

Re: New Member - -Two for the Money

Thanks again Briano!!! I have a feeling that I have already said this a hundred times. I have heard of this list - -spoken of in hushed and reverent tones- -and I will mark this so I can check it. I believe I will run the gas trans. looks pretty close. odd question. I thought I posted in the "t...

Re: Synthetic Oil

Thank you. I just changed the oil with a rotella that is made for diesels- -not the synthetic type. I agree Briano- -it looks pretty dirty in a short time. I have a kubota tractor and it only takes about 3 hours to look nasty. Thank you for your suggestions- -I had not thought about it running away-...

Re: Synthetic Oil

I know the thread is covering synthetics- -is there a reason to run synthetic in a diesel?

Is there a special oil for older diesels- -1.6 vw?

Re: New Member - -Two for the Money

Thanks Briano, I am sure that it will be at least a week or so before I am able to get this far- -Still waiting for the ordered parts and the Bentley manual. I was hoping to try the cheater method first- -release the tension, cut the belt in half long-ways, and slip the new one on- -probably all wis...
