The same thing happened to me not too long ago and as it turned out it was the plastic t-stat cover which had a crack on it.

Does anyone here know of any VW mechanic in the Orange County area in CA?

How much do I add? I think the tranny holds 2 quarts and what would happen if I over fill? Is there like a relief valve that would release any excess gear oil?
