Re: Anyone has/had a bent soft top mechanism?

Manuals may become obsolute, sure - in North America. But no where else in the world, that's for sure. Anyone who's been to other countries/continents would know this. In most Asian countries (save perhaps Japan to a small extent) there are virtually no one driving autos. Central and South America i...

Looking for a DIY on replacing the heater core

1990 Cabrio, no air con. Plan to replace the heater core soon, looking for a lead on a possible DIY (preferably with pics) on how to do this. I realize it's fairly easy on the MK1 chassis, unlike the nightmare that is the work on the mk3 (ask me how I know) Basically the windows fog up anytime I hav...

Re: Anyone has/had a bent soft top mechanism?

I still say that learning the harder one first is the way to go, since most people are too lazy or complacent to do it afterwards. Then again I point the finger at our fast food society, where everything has to be done fast, and obtaining a drivers license is no different. People have this sense of ...

Re: Anyone has/had a bent soft top mechanism?

Brian, hope you understand my post was meant to be comical and not insulting to those driving automatics, especially when sometimes this isn't due to choice, as apparently is your case. Sorry to hear about the stroke. Based on how active you are with your toys I'd never guess you've had such a traum...

Re: Anyone has/had a bent soft top mechanism?

Thanks for the tip on 303 Aero Protectant. Will pick one up soon. Looks like it's been years since anything was applied to my poor roof. Meaning it'll take a good amount of elbow grease to fully clean the thing. As for autos vs standard: I always thought the main reason behind driving VWs is the fun...

Any way to block wind in back seat?

I realize after searching this forum that there are options for reducing the wind for the front seat occupants, including those see-through screens made in Germany. But I'm looking for a way to reduce the wind over the back seat, more specifically keeping the wind out of our baby's face. When we dro...

Re: Anyone has/had a bent soft top mechanism?

Don't think you're wrong, it did feel a bit loose. I was going to just leave it as I never put much thought into it. But thanks for the note, I'll now be sure to tighten those. Still have that stupid white lithium to cleanup, some of which went onto the top (black side). Thinking of using Simple Gre...

Re: Anyone has/had a bent soft top mechanism?

 IT'S FIXED!!! Yes, the roof now works! Frame isn't bent after all. Man, am I relieved. For anyone that is facing my dilemma i hope this thread comes handy and that you try this first. I "fixed" mine completely by accident but let it a must do first step for anyone with ...

Re: Anyone has/had a bent soft top mechanism?

Thanks for the confirmation, even if it isn't what I wanted to hear. I sure won't be attempting to bend it back now that I realize it's almost impossible. Guess I'm now in line for a top. Tell me this though: if I was to locate a top in poor condition but with a working mechanism (frame), is it fair...

Re: Anyone has/had a bent soft top mechanism?

Thanks for all the assistance with this. Where I didn't take the pics you requested as of yet, I took a few that I think should help illustrate where the problem may be at. First off, I did use white lithium on the hinges and now they work beautifully. But when I tried to close the top, the problem ...

Anyone has/had a bent soft top mechanism?

Hi all, new here and to the world of Cabriolets (but certainly not new to VWs) Recently purchased this 1990 Cabrio that was falling apart and has become my pet project (and our 4th running VW). One of the parts that was badly neglected is the soft top. I need to resolve this but before I jump into i...
